Program Description
Since 2000 this professional development conference has provided some of the marquee speakers in the field of education from across the United States. This conference has a tradition of focusing on the instructional and leadership needs of assistant principals and teachers in instructional leadership positions. VAESP has dedicated this professional development opportunity to ensuring that assistant principals and lead teachers are exposed to the most recent research and best practices relating to instructional leadership; planning and assessment; communication & community relations; safety & organizational management for learning; and professionalism. The VAESP recognizes that applying these components of the education process will continue to play a leading role in making education more responsive to the children of the Commonwealth. What challenges remain for educating the children of Virginia? How can school leaders incorporate these components in a manner that enhances the efforts to meet state and federal government performance standards? What direction are various education agencies, social agencies and members of the general school community taking to bridge the efforts of the school and community to enhance teaching and learning that is applicable to the "real world"? The VAESP Assistant Principal/Lead Teacher Conference will examine these issues and many more at the Homestead on March 23-24, 2006.
The VAESP Assistant Principal/Lead Teacher Conference 2006 features the best national and local resources responsive to critical instructional leadership issues. VAESP strives to organize a high-quality program of resources that participants can take back for school-based professional development and implementation. So that educators attending the conference have a firm understanding of the instructional leadership issues that enhances teaching and learning, the VAESP Assistant Principal/Lead Teacher Conference 2006 will include presenters from K-8 schools, central office, higher education, public service agencies, and the private sector responsible for furthering the quality and effectiveness of the education services provided to the students who attend our schools. Small-group sessions will address strategic direction for success, hot buttons, lessons learned, present requirements the needs of the future.
Presenters will share copies of presentations with attendees. The networking lunch format provides opportunities for attendees to meet and eat with presenters. This format allows opportunities for attendees to request other materials from the presenters or other attendees. This format also provides attendees with opportunities to share strategies that are research-based and proven to be effective in engaging teachers and students in mastering the state and national performance standards. Participants will have opportunities to interact with education suppliers and collect available materials for review and consideration.

Program Goals and Objectives
By the end of VAESP 2006 Assistant Principals/Lead Teacher Conference, participants will have a clearer understanding of the impact of quality researched based instruction and effective building leadership on educating students to become productive members of a global society and an international workplace.
By the end of VAESP 2006 Assistant Principal/Lead Teacher Conference, participants will have networked with colleagues in a mutual sharing and collecting of researched based leadership and instructional ideas and materials. When implemented, these materials and ideas will enhance the education of the children in the schools throughout the Commonwealth in their efforts to meet state and national performance standards.
Program Format
The VAESP 2006 Assistant Principals/Lead Teacher Conference, format will follow the conference design. The format features keynote speakers, small group sessions, and a networking luncheon. Small group sessions offer a variety of opportunities and feature practitioners form education, the private sector, higher education, and community service providers.Target Audience
The focus of the content is specific to assistant principals and lead teachers in K-8 schools but all K-8 school leaders and teachers, central office personnel, support personnel, and higher education faculty responsible for preparing teachers and school leaders will benefit from attending this professional development opportunity.Self-Selection and/or Identification Through School Division
