The ETS PathwiseŽ School Leadership Workshop Series | Educational Testing Service
Program Description
The program is designed to help participants become more effective instructional leaders by focusing on the both the Virginia Standards for Administrators and the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC) Standards for School Leaders. Participants will understand how to apply those standards to their practice. In addition, participants, by engaging in small group discussions focused on case studies, will reflect on their own practice and make judgments about their levels of performance. Each participant will leave the training with two products: (a) a long-term professional growth plan and (b) a teaching and learning plan to address an issue in his/her own school.
The School Leadership Workshop series is based on the long experience ETS has had in applying the ISLLC Standards to practice through its development and management of the School Leaders Licensure Assessment. The workshop series is delivered by certified ETS Pathwise trainers or by local trained facilitators. Local trainers use the program facilitator kit which consists of detailed leader notes and a CD containing black line masters for transparencies and handouts. Each participant will be required to have three books. These books are A Framework for School Leaders: Linking the ISLLC Standards to Practice (Hessel & Holloway, ETS, 2002), Case Studies in School Leadership: Keys to a Successful Principalship (Hessel & Holloway, ETS, 2003), and Data Driven School Improvement: Conceptualizing a New Path (Holly, ETS, 2003).
Virginia Standard(s) Addressed
This workshop specifically addresses each of the six Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC) Standards for School Leaders, and, in turn, each of the four Virginia Standards for Administrators.Program Goals and Objectives
By the end of this program participants will demonstrate ability to apply the Virginia Standards for Administrators and the ISLLC Standards to their practice, identify and address barriers to learning in their own schools, and engage in the creation of a long-term personal-growth plan.Program Format
Each of the 10 training sessions includes large- and small-group discussions and individual self-reflection. The training is delivered using detailed leader notes by either certified ETS Pathwise trainers or trained local facilitators. Each session ends with an assignment which requires the participant to complete some independent reading or a planned activity at the participant's school. These completed assignments then become part of the succeeding session's instructional plan.Target Audience
The School Leadership Workshop Series is specifically designed to include an audience of current or aspiring school leaders from all school levels (PreK-12) and in all job categories (e.g., directors, supervisors, principals, assistant principals, superintendents, central office administrators and teachers). This program is intended for an audience of between 20-30 participants.Self-Selection and/or Identification Through School Division
No/yes.Duration of Program
The program consists of 10 sessions, each about three and one-half hours in length. We recommend that several days or weeks intervene between sessions; however two sessions may be delivered in one day. We recommend time be taken between sessions to complete assignments and reflect on the training.Outcomes Measured
The following program outcomes are measured during the training:
- Responses to questions of "Where are you?", "What do you want to know?" and "Where do you want to go?".
- Self-assessment profile to describe "where I am".
- Personal professional development plan.
- School improvement plan
Program Evaluation
The School Leadership Workshop Series is evaluated after each session using the Pathwise Feedback Form. This instrument is used as a quality control measure to determine the effectiveness of the training delivery and content. A pre- and post-test is also available which allows users to measure school leader growth.
The Feedback Form consists of a series of questions, some requiring a simple rating others requiring a more complete response, such as
- What activities were most helpful to you? Please explain why.
- What activities were least useful? Please explain why.
The Pre-and Post-analysis instrument is designed to measure changes in school leaders' behaviors.
