How to Handle Test Score News, Good, Bad, or Indifferent | Dr. Anne Meek

Program Description

This program provides concepts and strategies to use in answering questions from media representatives about student achievement as shown in Standards of Learning test scores and Standards of Accreditation for schools. Participants will learn how to prepare in advance for media inquiries. They can also use the content of this workshop in faculty meetings and for presentations to parent groups and civic clubs.

Virginia Standard(s) Addressed

Instructional Leadership (ISLLC standard 1) and Communication and Community Relations (ISLLC standard 4)

Program Goals and Objectives

By the end of this program, participants will learn how to prepare for announcements and inquiries regarding test score results. They will learn how to translate basic statistical terms such as trend lines, disaggregated data, and standard error of measurement into everyday language and how to analyze and interpret test score data from their schools. They will also practice on-camera interviews, including how not to merely answer a reporter's questions but to take advantage of the reporter's attention to publicize both major accomplishments and ongoing needs at their schools.

Program Format

The program will open with a very brief self-assessment of anticipated test scores from participants' own schools as well as their own answers to media questions, followed by sharing with the group. Participants will review basic statistical terms, identify helpful sources of test score information, and discuss issues in student testing. In a partner activity, they will identify "their own messages" and their own "success stories" for use in media interviews, followed by role-playing on-camera interviews. This session is informal, with ample question-and-answer opportunities.
