Program Description
The purpose of this one-of-a-kind training is to build capacity in a school or district to increase student achievement by developing highly skilled coaches (principals or other leaders) who are subject matter experts in the effective use of data, are able to construct highly effective and research-based interventions, and are capable of leading teams through the school improvement process throughout the school year. Graduates of this program are capable of assisting any district or school in all aspects of data analysis and facilitation of the school improvement process.Virginia Standard(s) Addressed

Program Goals and Objectives
By the end of this program, participants will learn how to:
Leadership
- Demonstrate the role of leadership in improving student achievement.
- Use a variety of strategies to monitor instruction and learning with data, including curriculum gap analysis, analysis of classroom assessments, and analysis around student work.
- Incorporate data-based decisions into classrooms, schools, and districts.
- Create a culture in which standards and data drive decision-making.
- Use protocols for helping others look at data and interventions in a systemic and systematic way.
- Make connections between state data requirements and those required by No Child Left Behind.
Visual Representation of Data
- Design and choose graphs and charts for a variety of data.
- Create, choose, and interpret graphical displays such as object graphs, bar graphs, pie charts, picture graphs, line graphs, conversion tables, frequency distributions, histograms, scatterplots, and stem-and-leaf plots.
Linking Data to Interventions at the School and Classroom Levels
- Link data to the school improvement process and plan.
- Link data to interventions and school improvement efforts.
- Make effective school and classroom decisions based on evidence and data.
- Use School Strategy Cards to create in-depth conversations around important questions related to curriculum, instruction, and assessment.
- Use Classroom Strategy Cards to create more effective learning experiences for struggling students.
- Prioritize and write action steps in the areas of curriculum, instruction, and assessment, based on data and results of in-depth conversations.
- Determine whether a school improvement plan will likely lead to improvement.
Learning Alignment
- Explain and give examples of alignment.
- Use data to support curriculum alignment.
- Demonstrate how to use an instructional model to ensure alignment.
- Analyze process data with respect to the alignment among curriculum, instruction, and assessment.
- Identify and create high-quality assessments, aligned to the district and state standards.
Analysis of Data
- Help others become familiar with score reports in an interesting and engaging way.
- Write thought-provoking analysis questions for different types of data (e.g., outcome, demographic, and process data), including data provided with score reports.
- Address critical questions with data: What do the results show? What would happen? What do you expect? Is there a change? Is there a relationship? Is there a pattern? What conclusions can you draw? What factors impact the data?
- Facilitate the analysis of school- and classroom-level data.
- Analyze different sources of data (e.g., PALS, SOL data, district-level data, classroom data, AP data, graduation data, etc.)
- Analyze the relationship between different types of data.
Organization of Data
- Organize data effectively and efficiently by content area (e.g., reading, writing, math, science, and social studies).
- Identify and correctly use three types of data: outcome, demographic, and process.
- Use a variety of techniques to collect and record data, including electronic tools and manipulatives.
- Use various techniques to organize data, including pictures, lists, charts, and graphs.
Communicating Data
- Communicate data visually, orally, and in writing.
- Plan and conduct a survey to answer a question or address an issue.
- Chart student, classroom, and school progress.
- Use data in a PowerPoint presentation.
Program Format
This one-of-a-kind program, personally designed and delivered by Deborah Wahlstrom and members of the Successline team, is challenging, engaging and interactive. In addition to using high-impact adult learning strategies and participant-centered techniques, this workshop includes the use of using district, school, and classroom data to make data-based decisions.Target Audience

Self-Selection and/or Identification Through School Division
No, unless a district wishes to have self-selection. Yes, this is a district-sponsored program.Duration of Program
- Option 1: 6-8 day-long sessions spread out over the school year. Participants work with a school, department, curriculum committee, or a grade-level team to implement the ideas during the year. Participants demonstrate skill in facilitation and implementation of the protocols during the school year.
- Option 2: 5-day program delivered in a one-week period.
Outcomes Measured
- Content knowledge is assessed throughout the workshop.
- Varies from district-to-district, depending on the needs of district staff. In Option 1 (6-8 days spread out during the school year), participants demonstrate and are certified on each task built into the program. Participants keep an electronic SchoolFolio of their work.
- In Option 2 (5 days in a one-week period), participants are certified on their successful demonstration of skills during the week-long workshop.
Program Evaluation
Participants complete an online or paper survey; results are reported back to the host district.Contact Information
