Program Description
The William and Mary Superintendents' Retreat promotes instructional leadership of school superintendents and addresses what superintendents need to know about instructional leadership that increases student achievement. The program features an annual campus-based program with nationally-known experts such as Robert Marzano (2005). The February 19-20, 2007 program will present the latest study on the superintendency from McREL, Superintendents and Student Achievement: Leveraging Leadership Within the System.
Virginia Standard(s) Addressed
Interstate School Leadership Licensure Consortium (ISLLC) Standards and Virginia Standards for Administrators are addressed with a strong emphasis on Instructional Leadership.
Program Goals and Objectives
By the end of this program, participants will demonstrate the ability to:
- Access resources on research-based instruction and leadership and apply to leadership practices.
- Participate in and expand a network of others in the superintendency.
- Leave with resources for district leadership development activities.
Program Format
- Superintendent members of the School-University Research Network Advisory Board identify the focus and assist in designing the program.
- Program limited to 60 participants to promote interaction with researchers and faculty, small-group dialogue, and networking.
- District superintendents register and pay fee.
- Participants receive book by featured speaker, materials, meals, and certificates of participation for recertification points.
Target Audience
The program is for district superintendents only. Participants include superintendents from Virginia and other states.

Duration of Program
- The 2.5-day program began in 2004 and continued in 2005.
- In 2006, the program will meet for 2 days.
Outcomes Measured
The degree to which school and district teams continue participation in the annual program.
Program Evaluation
- Evaluations of sessions completed by participants at the end of each program are analyzed by staff and inform planning future programs.
- Superintendents reflect on and discuss their experiences at the end of the conference and provide feedback to staff for planning the next year's Superintendents' Retreat and other services to division superintendents.
